2020 was the year the pandemic swallowed the news — but by how much, and what survived around it? BBC News Türkçe hired me as the data scientist for its year-in-review: I scraped the newsroom’s full year of tweets, ran computational text analysis over the most frequent terms, distilled six themes, and traced each theme’s weekly rhythm through animated bar-race visualizations. The picture: Covid-19 dominated from March onward, with Trump, the Turkish economy, femicides, the migrant crisis at Edirne, and the İzmir and Elazığ earthquakes moving underneath it.
